Around that same time, I decided to take on a new challenge: training for a professional Muay Thai fight in Thailand at the age of 41.
 
But there was a twist. My coach told me I had to stop lifting weights entirely and switch to bodyweight training only to get into fight shape.

MYTH #1

LONG BOUTS OF TRADITIONAL CARDIO WILL HELP YOU BURN FAT AND LOSE WEIGHT

One of the biggest myths in fitness today is that you have to spend hours a week doing long, slow, boring cardio like jogging or using cardio machines like the treadmill, elliptical, and stair climber.

That couldn’t be further from the truth. New studies show that long and boring cardio workouts actually cause your body to store more ugly fat than burn it.

A recent study in Psychoneuroendocrinology showed that if you’ve been spending hours on the treadmill and not seeing any results, it’s because long-distance cardiovascular exercise can decrease testosterone and raise your stress hormone levels like cortisol. (Reference: “Exercise Effects on Sleep and Metabolism in Obesity and Sleep Apnea” by Kline, C.E., et al., 2013)

Increased levels of cortisol stimulate the appetite, increase fat storage (especially around the belly), and slow down or inhibit exercise recovery.

IN OTHER WORDS, BY PERFORMING LONG SESSIONS OF CARDIO, YOU ARE TEACHING YOUR BODY TO STORE FAT INSTEAD OF BURNING IT.

MYTH #2

BODYBUILDING STYLE WORKOUTS FOCUSING ON ISOLATION EXERCISES IS THE ONLY WAY TO BUILD LEAN, RIPPED MUSCLES

You’ve probably heard that the only way to build muscle is by using traditional weight training workout splits focusing on single muscle groups and isolation exercises.

Isolation exercises are single-joint movements that only train one muscle group at a time with minimal involvement from other supporting muscles.

These are the workouts used by top bodybuilders who spend 2-3 hours and sometimes more every day in the gym, training hard to build those massive muscles you see them flex on the stage.Increased levels of cortisol stimulate the appetite, increase fat storage (especially around the belly), and slow down or inhibit exercise recovery.

However, isolation exercises do NOT stimulate much release of growth hormone, which is essential for muscle growth.

Research from the Journal of Applied Physiology showed that using compound exercises with high intensity and short rest periods increases growth hormone and testosterone levels more than isolation exercises. (Reference: “The Hormonal Response to Resistance Exercise and its Implications for Training Adaptation” by Kraemer, W.J., 2005)
